Self
Catering, is also known as
'Vacation Rental' and 'Self
Contained'
Guest House has
all sorts of connotations, particularly if you come from the
States. In the UK, 'Guest House' generally means providers that
are not quite a Hotel but more like a bed and breakfast in their
approach, but having more than two letting bedrooms. Normally, also,
they may provide an evening meal. Most bed and breakfasts have
a 'closed time' during the day but Guest Houses tend to be more
flexible. It is sometimes a good idea to
enquire about facilities if you are not sure.
Grading. A good proportion of the
accommodation on the island is graded by the Scottish Tourist
Board, now called 'Visit
Scotland'. The Board works on a 'Star' system with a one to five
rating. 5 Star is 'Excellent' or 'World Class'.
Some providers are not
in the Tourist Board, for various reasons, and may be listed
on this site. I have no 'Quality Assurance Scheme' in place
to judge quality. People using this
site must use their own
judgement.
