Isle of Great Bernara

Great Bernara is a small island connected to Lewis by a bridge on the B8059.  At Bosta in the north west, the island has a wonderful beach, and an 'iron age' village. One of the Iron Age houses has been superbly rebuilt, and entry is available during the summer.  The island also has its own museum and cafe at Braclete, situated within the community centre.  The island has many antiquities including standing stones, duns and a restored Norse Mill.

Beaches of West Lewis

Both Lewis and Harris have superb beaches on their western shores. Locations of the beaches are on the large islands map. One notable beach is at Uig, not just because of its extensive golden sands, but also because of a discovery of a Viking Chess set in a small stone chamber at the edge of the Beach. Inside were 93 Chess pieces made of Morse Ivory, from the husks of Walrus teeth. The pieces were probably crafted in Trondheim Norway.

 The Whale bone Arch

This is situated beside two houses on the A857.  If you are coming from the North then it is on the right hand side.  If from the south,  then obviously on the left.  The two bones that comprise the arch are the lower jaw bones of a Blue Whale and were removed from a beached Whale that came ashore in 1920.  The harpoon that is shown in the picture was still in the Whale, however the explosive charge in the Harpoon's head had failed to explode.  Therefore, both Whale and Harpoon were intact.  The Crofter that dealt with both Harpoon and Whale was lucky not have been injured when the Harpoon's head finally exploded in his shed.  Luckily he was not in the shed at the time.

The magnificent Whalebone Arch now stands as a gateway in the garden of the two houses.

Ness
A 857 to Ness (Nis) Northwards from Barvas, this route has many small art based businesses, ranging from potteries and art galleries to several first class photographers. Past the Morven Gallery, stands the Trussel stone, the largest Standing Stone in Scotland (6 Mt.). This area was also the site of the last battle between the Macaulays and Morrisons. A little further up the A857 on the opposite side are the Steinacleit Stone Sets. Further up on the left is Borgh Pottery. On entering Ness, is the Ness Heritage Centre. This centre is a must to visit if you are interested in good quality local information about the past. It contains an impressive archive of documents, genealogical records, photographs, video and audio recordings and a café. At Port of Ness is 10 Callicvol, another high quality resource for local historical and family information. Port of Ness is a picturesque fishing village, with a good beach. Other attractions include a wonderful play park for the children, and The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. The Trussel stone
